August: Chairman’s message

Visit to Elford Hall Gardens

Our August meeting took nineteen of our members to Elford Hall Gardens. We were so lucky to have warm sunshine that afternoon after a wet and chilly August so far. Our two excellent guides took us to explore the pathway and land by the river Tame, which had been flooded just a week ago, then through the sensory gardens into the large walled garden.

They explained that since 2009 the site has been restored mostly by volunteers to retain as much of its original character as possible. It is open to everyone and admission is free so well worth a visit if you haven’t visited already. Several of us particularly loved the rose garden in one corner of the walled garden with many scented traditional roses.

We then sat down to numerous plates of delicious cakes in the marquee. The raffle was won by Betty Riley. A big thank you to Sue and Jean for organising the visit, and to our guides who outlined the history of the Hall, and garden restoration, and answered our many questions.

Earlier this month Roe, Jennie and I visited Audrey Lunn at Footherley Hall care home. She was well and delighted to see us, and shared many of her memories of Ladies Circle and Tangent. She would love to see any member who has time to visit. I also joined the coffee group for their meeting at Rachel’s.

I am sure you will all be pleased to know that Helen is now home from hospital after her recent operation. We wish her a speedy recovery and hope that she will soon be well enough to join us again.

Several of us enjoyed 41 Club’s BBQ at Rob and Brenda’s on August 15th. Thanks to our hosts for a brilliant evening, and to all those who worked so hard to make the evening such a success. Brenda, Jean and Sue were all busy in the kitchen when we arrived, our thanks to them also.

Pearl has already emailed everyone with details of our next meeting on September 3rd at The Old Vicarage, when our speaker will be Becky Williams, Director of Rugby at Lichfield Ladies Rugby Club. Please note the new time of 6.30pm for 7.00pm start.
