March 2020 : Chairman’s message

Chairman’s Meeting March 3rd

We were all so lucky that the rain stopped and the sun shone for our walk from Cross Keys up to Cathedral Close and Chapters for lunch. Twenty five of us enjoyed a leisurely lunch of good, home cooked fresh produce in the Garden Room before the short walk round to the West door of the Cathedral.

We were met by Neil and Robert, our two knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides who were both passionate about the history of our beautiful Cathedral. I have lived in Lichfield on and off for over thirty five years and I thought that I knew much of its past  but that seemed nothing compared with the detailed knowledge of our guides, who recounted history from before St Chad to present times.

I was particularly interested in the “Lichfield Angel” and Chalice which had been found in a recent archaeological dig in 2003 under the altar in the Nave, and the Gospels of Mathew, Mark and part of Luke which were all on display in the Chapter House. These three finds were thought to be from the early 8th  Century. We were also able to view the Vestments room with some of the original coal tile floor, and Dr Johnson’s prayer hole, neither of which I had seen before.

Special thanks to Ruth for being my chauffeur for the afternoon and for organising the raffle which was won by Jackie Littlewood. Also to Pearl who liaised with Chapters and arranged our enjoyable lunch.

In February I attended 41 Club’s Ladies Lunch, a new venture and format which I thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately the floods caused by Storm Dennis prevented several members and guests from reaching the venue. I also joined our coffee ladies’ group for lunch at Bistro 1709. We have received a letter from Pauline thanking us for the flowers, which was passed around at our meeting. I sent a card on Tangent’s behalf to 41 Club to congratulate them on their 65th Charter and to wish them a good evening. I understand this was displayed on top table.

I can’t believe that my year is almost over and we are already planning for the next. You will be pleased to note that Pat has been busy recruiting for your new Exec and we have just one position left to fill, that of Vice Chairman. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered so far, and to everyone else please do think seriously about standing. I have thoroughly enjoyed this year, especially because everyone has been so supportive and encouraging with advice and gentle reminders.

Our AGM is on Tuesday April 7th at The Old Vicarage, Branston. Pearl has already sent the details to everyone. Please remember that subscriptions are due in April and Helen will be advising on the amount at the AGM.

Diary Dates

Tuesday March 10th  Exec meeting at my house at 3.00pm. We will be discussing the National AGM agenda, and if anyone would like to register a comment or vote, please e-mail me beforehand. I sent the agenda (which Jenny prepared) to everyone a week ago.

I look forward to seeing you all at the AGM.
