Roe’s final Chairman’s Report

This time last year as I ascended those stairs, I had no inkling that I would be walking down them as Chairman of our Tangent.  I have not regretted that decision once this year, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the chair.  It hasn’t all been smooth running I have made mistakes which I hope not to repeat in the future, no guarantees on that one.  It has been a pleasure working with our excellent committee who have looked after me and you very well this year.  Lichfield Tangent would not run without them.

I also thank all members for supporting our meetings this year, attendance has been down a bit this year but that is how it goes.  I hope that you will continue to support our new Chairman and executive committee this year to keep Lichfield a happy and busy club.

I have a small gift for my executive members as a token of my gratitude for all their help and support this year.

Other members received theirs prior to this evening.

I would also like to say a big thank you to David Cole for posting our news, reports and diaries on the Website, we have bought him a small gift as a token of our appreciation.

Report from the National Conference in Torquay

Sue Jay very nobly attended the Tangent National Conference in Torquay on behalf of Lichfield Tangent 116.

Her noblesse was rewarded by having to stand for a long time in the cold and rain on Friday night during the President’s banquet, due to a fire alarm!!

A brief summary of her report is given below:

  • 4 new clubs have joined the National Association, but 27 clubs have disaffiliated, mainly due to an ageing membership
  • President Jill announced that £15,000 had been raised for her chosen charity, Round Table Children’s Wish
  • Candidates for posts on the National Executive spoke and the results of elections were announced before lunch
  • The new Vice President is Tracey Pickin
  • National subs are to be increased to £6.50

Sue spoke at the lectern in our name (wow!!) asking what the cost implications would be if Tangent were to take a more active role in planning National Conference.  41 Club would need to approve this too, but the proposal was approved.

Sue Hill was installed as the new National President for 2019-2020. Her theme for the year is “With Courage Nothing is Impossible” (a quote by Sir William Hillary, Founder of the RNLI in 1824)

Her chosen charity is RNLI – this will be jointly supported by 41 National President Andrew.

They are looking to raise £50,000 to be able to buy five rescue water crafts to be placed around the country and suitably named after 41/Tangent

Diary date for 2019: 21st September, National President’s Charity Lunch at Vale Royal Abbey Golf Club, Cheshire. £35, application form on the Tangent website

A big THANK YOU to Sue for attending Conference on our behalf.

New Chair at Annual General Meeting

Chairman’s introduction 2019-2020

Like many of you I was unable to attend our AGM. My dear husband had booked tickets for “Les Miserables” in Birmingham as a surprise, and only remembered to tell me the date in early March.

Is it a first when both the incoming Chairman and Vice were not present at the AGM?

Thank you all for your support and trust, I have so much still to learn about Tangent and shall be relying on the advice and experience of you all.

For those of you who don’t know much about me I was a founder member of Lichfield District Circle, and privileged to be elected as founder Chairman. When John’s job took us to Sheffield we both transferred into Sheffield Ladies Circle and Round Table, and I became Chairman again. On our return to Lichfield ten years later (John’s job move again), I was too old to return to Circle.

I was delighted when Ruth asked me to be an honorary member of Tangent during her year as Chairman and have enjoyed my role as Treasurer over the past two years.

I am looking forward to the year ahead and continuing the good relationship we have with both Lichfield Ladies Circle and Lichfield Tangles, especially as my younger daughter is a member of Lichfield Circle.

An enormous thanks to all the Executive Officers who volunteered to continue, or take on new roles. They have a wealth of experience to plan for a memorable year ahead.

I look forward to seeing you all at our meetings throughout the year.
